Investopedia: Best Short Term Stock Screener, 2024

The short answer: Day trading takes more than a scanner. You need to find the stock, read the chart, decide, test, practice and place the order. Trade Ideas is our pick because it covers those jobs in one piece of software, from Streaming Alerts to paper trading to in-app trading through your broker. If you are a Schwab client who wants free charts and order entry, start with thinkorswim.

Written by Daniel Mirkin, CEO of Trade Ideas, which makes one of the tools compared here.

Our picks, by the job you need done

More than a scanner

The day-trading software stack

A scanner finds the stock. Day trading takes more than that. Most day traders need software for six jobs.

  1. Find. A scanner or screener shows what is moving.
  2. Read. Charts show where the levels are.
  3. Decide. Signals or your own rules tell you when to act.
  4. Test. A backtest shows how the setup behaved before.
  5. Practice. Paper trading builds the habit with no money at risk.
  6. Execute. Orders go to a broker, by hand or by automation.

Only comparing scanners? Our day trading scanner roundup covers them.

The list

Eight day trading tools, compared for 2026

  1. 1. Trade Ideas

Trade Ideas covers most of the day-trading stack in one piece of software. You find the stock, read it, test it, practice it and trade it without switching apps.

Find setups, built your way. Trade Ideas has 310 alerts and 249 filters, each on its own help page. Opening range breakout and breakdown alerts run at 1, 2, 5, 10, 15, 30 and 60 minutes (2-minute breakout, 10-minute breakdown). Technical alerts include a 1-minute 5/8 SMA cross up and a 5-minute narrow range buy bar, each firing market-wide when it happens. Join any alert to any filters with your own min and max, and fine-tune 191 of the alerts with a setting of their own, such as the volume multiple on a 1-minute volume spike; the possible scans are effectively unlimited.

Find and read. Live market data runs on every plan, from the premarket through the close. Streaming Alerts and Top Lists find the stock. Ten charts on screen and TI Wave, which times entries and exits on a stock you already picked, help you read it.

Decide with a plan. Holly AI Signals arrive intraday on TI Premium. Each one carries an entry, a stop and a target. Holly looks for large, long-term potential winners, so you can exit that day or hold. Holly AI Assistant, in every TI Pro plan, builds scans from plain English.

Test, then practice. OddsMaker backtests a setup on Trade Ideas history with no code, on TI Premium. Real-time paper trading comes with TI Standard, so the habit forms before money is at risk.

Trade it, or automate it. In-app trading runs through a connected broker. On TI Premium, Money Machine automates entries and trade management from your own scans, with a Simulated Mode to watch first.

Start with help. No configuration is needed, and the Channel Bar is in TI Pro on every plan. The free Trading Room with Barrie Einarson runs every market day.

Price: Monthly, TI Standard is $127; yearly, $1,068. TI Premium is $254 a month or $2,136 a year and adds Smart Risk Levels, Compare Count windows and customizable Stock Races.

Worth knowing: Trade Ideas covers U.S.-listed stocks. Its options data is limited to volume-based filters. TI Pro is Windows software. Mac traders can use the browser-based web Dashboard instead; it needs no download but leaves out Streaming Alerts and Holly.

Common question

Can you day trade with free software?

You can start. thinkorswim costs nothing for Schwab clients and includes charts, Stock Hacker scans, order entry and paperMoney. TradingView Basic is free for charts. Finviz has a free version with delayed quotes.

The free options on this list do not list AI signals or no-code backtesting. You can add those jobs later, one at a time, as you learn what you need.

TI Standard runs $127 per month or $1,068 per year. It includes real-time data, 10 charts, paper trading, in-app trading and Holly AI Assistant. Barrie Einarson's free Trading Room is open weekdays, 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. ET.

Honest take

Who Trade Ideas is not for

Trade Ideas pays off when you use several of its jobs every day. It is a poor fit in these cases.

  • You trade futures or forex only. Trade Ideas covers U.S.-listed stocks, so look at software built for those markets.
  • You want a free all-in-one app from your broker. Schwab clients get thinkorswim at no charge.
  • The cost is large next to the size of your account. Start with a free tool and paper trading.
If you are okay with static non-refreshing data, Trade Ideas is probably not your best choice.

FAQ

Day trading software: FAQ

What is the best day trading software?

Trade Ideas covers all seven jobs in our table in one place, so it is our pick, though we make it and you should judge it yourself. Schwab clients often start with thinkorswim, and chart-first traders often use TradingView. TI Standard is $127 a month or $1,068 a year, and TI Premium adds Holly AI Signals, OddsMaker and Money Machine.

What software do day traders need?

A scanner, charts, news and a broker, and many add signals, a backtester and paper trading. Some tools, such as Trade Ideas, cover several of these jobs at once. Begin with the jobs you use daily and add the rest as you learn.

Is a stock scanner enough for day trading?

Not on its own. A scanner finds the stock, but you also need charts, an entry and exit plan, and a broker. TI Standard adds charts, paper trading and in-app trading to the scanner, so you can practice the whole routine first.

Can Trade Ideas automate my trades?

Yes, with Money Machine on TI Premium. It automates entries and trade management from the Top Lists and Streaming Alerts you choose, setting a stop and a target for each stock. A Simulated Mode lets you watch it work before you commit money.

Which brokers work with Trade Ideas?

Trade Ideas Pro connects to Interactive Brokers, TradeStation, E*TRADE and Alpaca by API, and to Moomoo, CenterPoint and Cobra through partnerships. In-app trading is part of TI Standard, so confirm your broker is on the list before you choose a plan.

Can I practice day trading before using real money?

Yes. TI Standard includes real-time paper trading, thinkorswim has paperMoney, and TradingView, TC2000 and StocksToTrade list paper trading as well. It uses today's market with no money at risk, so you can test your plan first.
