How to Find Momentum Stocks

Momentum stocks are symbols outperforming the market and their sector over a defined window—intraday or multi-day—with rising price, expanding volume, and relative strength that suggests continuation until structure breaks.

How Is Momentum Measured for Scanning?

Percent change over one day, five days, or from open. Relative strength versus SPY or sector ETF. New high of day, week, or year. Price above rising moving averages. RSI and MACD confirmation optional. Momentum scans rank descending on these fields. Leaders cluster in hot sectors during risk-on regimes. Weak index days still produce relative momentum—stocks green while market red. Define momentum window matching hold period.

Five-day momentum for swing; percent from open for intraday—do not mix entry styles blindly.

What Scanner Stacks Find Momentum Early?

Opening: change from close or open plus RVOL plus sector strength. First hour: new high of day with rising participation. Swing: five-day percent change top decile with volume above average three days. Avoid buying the first vertical bar—wait for a pullback. A practical entry framework after the scan: 15-minute chart with a 10-period simple moving average—look for holds of the 10 SMA on pullbacks. Secondary scan: momentum pullback—percent from open between −2% and +1% on a name that was up 8% earlier.

Sector momentum scan first, then stock scan within the leading sector—narrows false leaders in weak groups.

How Do You Separate Healthy Momentum From Climax?

Healthy: orderly pullbacks, RVOL steady, higher lows on the 15-minute chart near the 10 SMA. Climax: parabolic bars, RVOL spike then drop, wide wicks at highs, price stretched far above the 10 SMA. Scanner percent leader late day after a 50% move is often climax, not entry. Use a maximum extension filter from VWAP or open. Check short interest—squeeze momentum behaves differently. Journal climax versus trend trades to tune filters.

When leader spreads widen and tick size jumps, reduce size or stand down—the momentum phase may be ending.

What Entry and Risk Rules Apply to Momentum Stocks?

Prefer entries on a 15-minute chart using the 10 SMA: buy when price pulls back to and holds the average, with a stop below the pullback low or on a decisive close under the SMA. Or break of a micro consolidation after the first leg. Risk 1% of account max. Partial at one R. Trail below higher lows. Do not add to losers on momentum hope. If a momentum scan alert fires but the daily chart is extended into major resistance, pass—momentum is short-term; overhead is long-term.

Align momentum long scans with an index trend filter—counter-index momentum longs need smaller size.

How Do You Maintain a Momentum Watchlist?

Refresh intraday. Drop names losing VWAP if long bias. Carry multi-day momentum names overnight only with swing rules and earnings check. Compare today's momentum list to yesterday—repeat names get priority study. Momentum stocks change daily but personalities repeat—learn how frequent leaders behave on your scans.
