What is a bearish engulfing pattern?

A bearish engulfing pattern is a green candle followed by a larger red candle. The red body opens at or above the green close and finishes below the green open.

It shows sellers erasing the last candle's gains in one move, which is why traders watch for it after a rally.

How traders use it

Step 1: Let the Trade Ideas alert find it

Switch on NGD5, the 5 Minute Bearish Engulfing alert. It watches 5 minute candles on every stock and reports the pattern when the second candle closes. See it live in the Web Dashboard.

Step 2: Wait for the trigger

Trader tip

Traders who are long may treat the close of the red candle as a warning. Shorts often want follow-through on the next bar.

Step 3: Entry

A short entry near the red close, or on a bounce that fails inside the red body, are both common.

Step 4: Exit

Stops usually go above the high of the two candles. Treat that as common practice rather than a recommendation.

Tips

  • Look for it near the day's high or a known resistance level.
  • A big red candle on heavy volume is clearer than a small one.
  • Do not fight a strong uptrend on one candle alone.
  • See the bullish version, Bullish Engulfing (NGU5).

How the 5 Minute Bearish Engulfing alert works

This alert signals the appearance of a bearish engulfing pattern on a traditional 5-minute candlestick chart. Components of a bearish engulfing pattern include:

  • The first candlestick is typically a green or bullish candlestick, indicating an upward price movement
  • The second candlestick is a red or bearish candlestick, indicating a downward price movement
  • The bearish candlestick "engulfs" the bullish one, meaning it opens below and closes above the previous candlestick

This pattern often signifies a shift in market sentiment from bullish to bearish, as sellers have taken control and pushed the price lower.

5 Minute Bearish Engulfing Description

Key point

The quality value on a scan using the "5 Minute Bearish Engulfing" represents the grade based on how closely the stock chart matches the ideal shape of the stock pattern. 0% would mean that there was no match at all. Of course, if a stock pattern is this poor a match, then we are unlikely to report an alert. 100% would be an ideal match. Again, this would be an ideal and extreme case. Few if any alerts come close to 100%.
